To make it easier in terminal I get the UUID and label of a disk by typing "diskutil info -all" (I could specify the drive itself too). This will give you two uuids, you want the first one.Lisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01782772370374878052noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484732581203772469.post-67230573864710469212015-12-15T05:15:39.650-08:002015-12-15T05:15:39.650-08:00I replaced Laura Müllers Realtek RTL8111 driver wi...I replaced Laura Müllers Realtek RTL8111 driver with this one. So I recently started investigating options of gaining some control to protect my data. I am clueless to programming etc, non very technical, but your blog is so useful and makes it easy for me to follow what you say and go do it.
Having said that, I will just now try to mount a partitioning on my Users point, so... crossing fingers now!
Thanks so much! ...@Jonathan Payne: I totally missed your comment...
Have you verified that Ownership is enabled on the RAID volume ?
Was the backup a recent one ? With correct UID (the numeric UserID associated with a user account) ?

For getting things back in order, I'd recheck UID and permissions.
1) Checking the UID:
Open "System Preferences|Users & Groups", right-click on your User, and select "Advanced Options". Don't make any changes there! Just note the User ID.
For example, 502

Then check the UID of your home directory
# ls -lnd ~lnx2mac/
drwxr-xr-x+ 24 502 20 1462 Feb 19 06:44 /Users/lnx2mac/
As we can see in this case, 502 is the User ID, just as it's expected.
Otherwise, you'd have to use the 'chown' command or the Finder interface (via the Info window) to change ownership.

2) Checking the permissions:
# ls -lde ~lnx2mac
drwxr-xr-x+ 24 lnx2mac staff 1462 Feb 19 06:44 /Users/lnx2mac/
0: group:everyone deny delete

In this example, the output of the ls command starts with 'drwxr-xr-x+'.
This means it's a directory, and it's followed by the permissions for the 'owner' (rwx), the group (r-x), and everybody else (r-x).
Permissions are a combination of: read, write, and execute (which for directories means allow entering them).
The + means extended access control (the 0: group:everyone deny delete that follows).

So, "drwxr-xr-x+" is correct (but you might have more strict permissions like drwx------+).
Otherwise, you'd have to use the 'chmod' command or the Finder interface (via the Info window) to change permissions.

As for using SymLinks, since I moved my main system to a 240GB SSD, I keep both OS & /Users on separate partitions on the SSD, and the big data on a HDD.

Lnx2Machttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02657587386685255719noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484732581203772469.post-28238449077479698252013-02-19T07:39:55.940-08:002013-02-19T07:39:55.940-08:00@gino@MacHero I'm glad this solved the kernel ...@gino@MacHero I'm glad this solved the kernel panics on your Xserv !Lnx2Machttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02657587386685255719noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484732581203772469.post-46660645765060722142013-02-19T07:37:00.709-08:002013-02-19T07:37:00.709-08:00@Luke Mackenzie: no, the 8110SC is not currently s...@Luke Mackenzie: no, the 8110SC is not currently supported.Lnx2Machttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02657587386685255719noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484732581203772469.post-41440388861883568592013-02-19T07:35:29.619-08:002013-02-19T07:35:29.619-08:00@Pedro Varela, when you do disconnect/reconnect th...@Pedro Varela, when you do disconnect/reconnect the Ethernet cable, do you see the 'LED-like' indicator in System Preferences|Network turn Red and then Green ?Lnx2Machttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02657587386685255719noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484732581203772469.post-32763742663507940942013-02-19T07:32:53.665-08:002013-02-19T07:32:53.665-08:00@Interloper: Yes, fragmentation support is planned...@Interloper: Yes, fragmentation support is planned for the very next release.Lnx2Machttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02657587386685255719noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1484732581203772469.post-17168858431858546042013-02-12T09:25:12.242-08:002013-02-12T09:25:12.242-08:00Works great as an alternate driver for StarTech.co...Works great as an alternate driver for StarTech.com PEX1000MMST fiber PCIe card.
